Julie Gudmestad, PT
Julie pursued her interests in movement and healing by attending physical therapy school at Pacific University, where she graduated in 1977. She has practiced physical therapy continuously since then and opened her physical therapy private practice in 1983. She has work experience and advanced training in orthopedics, chronic pain, sports injuries and stress-related problems.
Julie began teaching yoga in 1970 while still a student at Reed College. She was introduced to Iyengar yoga in the late 70’s, and became Iyengar certified in 1988. Since then, she opened Gudmestad Yoga Studio and has trained the teachers who now also teach there.
For many years Julie has been working to integrate the healing powers of yoga with her Western medical knowledge. She has created a unique teaching style and teaches workshops, including Anatomy Awareness in Asana and Yoga for Physical Therapists, throughout the US, Canada and in Eurpoe. She also wrote the "Anatomy of a Yogi" column in Yoga Journal for 7 years.
While her focus has turned mostly to teaching and writing at this point in her career, Julie still consults with yoga students and teachers who are interested in refining and/or progressing their practice incorporating yoga poses to facilitate healing of their injuries.
When not practicing or teaching yoga, Julie enjoys hiking, gardening, reading and driving her little convertible on sunny Portland days.
